Science Notes Five

Functions of Cell Structures:
  1. Store or release energy
  2. Building new and repairing old cell parts
  3. Getting rid of waste
  4. Respond to environment
  5. Reproduce
Cell Parts (in more detail):
  • Cell Wall (made of cellulose)
    • Protection and Support
    • Only in Plants
  • Cell Membrane (regulates flow of materials)
  • Nucleus
    • Control Center
    • DNA (stores info)
    • RNA (reads DNA messages)
  • Nuclear Membrane
    • Seperates Nucleus from rest of cell
    • Allows material exchange
  • Chromosomes
    • Found in Nucleus
    • Made of DNA&RNA
    • Pass on cell traits to new cell
  • Nucleolus
    • Found in Nucleus
    • Makes RNA
  • Endoplasmic Reticulum (E.R.)
    • Makes and transports proteins
  • Ribosomes
    • Makes proteins
    • Two types: free or attached (to E.R.)
  • Mitochondria
    • Produces energy
    • Bean-shaped
  • Vacuoles
    • Storage tanks
    • Store water, food, waste, etc. There are specific types of vacuoles for each type of material stored
  • Lysosomes
    • Stores digestive enzymes
  • Chloroplasts
    • Capture light to make food for plant
    • Use chlorophyll
  • Golgi bodies
    • Package and ship proteins
  • Centroli
    • Found almost only in animal cells
    • Timekeeper for cell division
I might type more soon but my internet is acting up, so don't count on it.
